St George was martyred in Israel, his cult spread throughout East and West and the legend of the Dragon came sometime afterwards. King Richard I of England placed his army under the protection of St George and his feast was proclaimed as a holiday in 1222.
Almighty God,
As we reflect on St George,
we give thanks for the heroic life he gave
even though he was subject to torture.
Let us look to St George the Patron of England
and ask for his protection in
challenging times and when we ourselves
are defending our faith.
We ask this through Christ your Son, our Lord.
Amen
St George. Pray for us.
